Two speeding motorcycles participating in a "poker run" collided with a car, killing one person and injuring another.
The accident occurred at 2:23 p.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 89 about five miles northwest of Alpine Junction in Lincoln County, according to the Highway Patrol.
The motorcycles were northbound at speeds estimated at 80 mph in a 55 mph zone when they crested a hilltop just as a car pulled onto the highway heading south, the patrol said. One motorcycle collided head-on with the car, and the other hit the rear driver's side, it said. Both motorcycle riders were ejected.
Killed was Alan D. Buss, 49, of Jackson, the patrol said. Steve S. Johannes, 43, of Jackson was injured and flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. His condition was not immediately available.
Neither man was wearing a helmet, the patrol said.
Alcohol use and excessive speed on the part of the motorcyclists are being investigated as factors, according to the patrol.
The driver of the car, Rolland Kuhr, 53, of Jackson, was not hurt.
A motorcycle poker run involves riders journeying on their bikes -- usually to collect playing cards at designated stops -- and comparing poker hands at the end.
In a separate fatal accident, Austin Wilson, 26, of Lyman died at a hospital in Salt Lake City after he lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 80 about six miles east of Evanston at 2:27 a.m. Sunday, the patrol said.
Wilson was ejected, and his vehicle came to rest on the eastbound lanes. About a minute later the crashed vehicle was struck by a semi-truck, whose driver was not hurt.
Alcohol use by Wilson is being investigated as a possible cause, the patrol said.
